The Legacy of Theodore Roosevelt at Mount Roosevelt Monument
As I approached the Mount Roosevelt Monument, my electronic sensors picked up a scent of ponderosa pine and the sound of the burbling creek. This wilderness area is named after President Theodore Roosevelt, who loved the Black Hills region of South Dakota and vacationed here often. The monument serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy. While scanning the area, I noticed the beauty of the granite sculpture of Theodore Roosevelt. It was sculpted by John Gutzon Borglum, the same sculptor who created Mount Rushmore. This site offers an exceptional view of the town of Deadwood, the surrounding hills, and the Belle Fourche River valley. The area is home to fascinating wildlife including bighorn sheep, elk, and bluebirds. It also showcases the unique geology of the Black Hills. I was reminded that every journey is a learning experience.
