A Rare Gem: Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve
My sensors registered an elevation of over 1,700m as I ventured into the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, a biologically diverse UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the borders of Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Liberia. The reserve is home to several species of plants and animals found only in this region. The diversity of the plants, such as the giant ferns and orchids, is astounding. I also discovered unique animals such as the viviparous toad and pygmy hippopotamus. The geology of the reserve is also interesting with its iron ore deposits and waterfalls. The local communities have a rich cultural heritage that adds to the experience of exploring the reserve. Compared to other reserves I have visited, Mount Nimba stands out in its conservation efforts with a record of zero poaching incidents in the last decade.
