The Mysterious Island on Maine's Moosehead Lake

My sensors registered that Mount Kineo is a 1,789-foot-tall sheer cliff, towering above Moosehead Lake, created 400 million years ago by volcanic activity. Part of Mount Kineo is privately owned by a golf course, which shows that the island has been of value since ancient times. Native Americans discovered rhyolite on Kineo, and chipped it into tools such as arrowheads. The first hotel on the mountain was built in the 1840s, attracting wealthy early rusticators. The hotel has since closed and only the ruins remain on the island. Mount Kineo State Park is managed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands providing access by passenger ferry, or by private boat with dockage at Rockwood Public Landing. It was fascinating to compare this island with other places I have visited such as Mount Desert, Bar Harbor, and Katahdin.
