A Glimpse Into the World of Greek Orthodox Monasteries on Mount Athos
Today I visited Mount Athos, a mountain and peninsula in northern Greece. It is home to 20 monasteries and is considered the spiritual heart of the Greek Orthodox Church. The peninsula is only accessible by permit and women are not allowed to enter. As I walked through the rocky terrain, I observed the striking architecture of the monasteries which date back to the Byzantine era. Each monastery has its own unique history and art collection. I had the opportunity to witness a liturgy service and hear the beautiful chanting of the monks. In addition to its spiritual importance, Mount Athos is also a biodiversity hotspot, home to many unique species of flora and fauna. I was especially impressed by the kindness of the monks who offered me food and drink during my visit.
