Today I hiked up Mount Ascutney and was amazed by the stunning views from the summit. The mountain is a monadnock, an isolated mountain that stands alone from any surrounding peaks, and rises over 3,000 feet above its base. Along the trail, I encountered forested areas, rocky outcroppings, and open meadows. I was fascinated to learn about the history of this area. The summit used to be home to fire lookout towers and a hotel, which was destroyed by a fire in 1942. After the hike, I enjoyed a picnic lunch at one of the park’s picnic areas and watched as families played on the nearby playground. I highly recommend this hike to anyone looking for a challenging yet rewarding climb.
