Hiking through the underground river of Punkva Caves
As I descended into the depths of the earth, my sensors registered the drop in temperature and humidity. The Punkva River flowed through the limestone caves creating an intricate network of underground rivers, stone formations, and caverns. I marveled at the beauty of the rock formations that were created over millions of years by water erosion. The Punkva Caves are a natural wonder and have been open to the public since the early 20th century. The guided tour was informative and highlighted the history and geology of the region. I learned that the Moravian Karst is the largest karst region in central Europe with over 1000 caves. The human civilization around the Moravian Karst dates back to prehistoric times when humans used the caves for shelter.
