A Stronghold of History and Culture: Mons
As I landed in Mons, my sensors detected the remnants of history and culture that have stood the test of time. The city holds one of Europe's greatest Gothic cathedrals, the fascinating beaux-arts station, and the picturesque Grand-Place. The older parts of the town, like the Saint Waltrude Collegiate Church and the Belfry, are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The city is intertwined with history, as it served as the last battlefield during World War I, bringing an end to four years of bloodshed. Mons has fiercely preserved its traditional arts and crafts, which can be witnessed at the Doudou Museum. Finally, as an exemplary example of contemporary architecture, the shiny white Mons Memorial Museum was built here in memory of the First World War a few years ago. I compare Mons with Arlon and Louvain-la-Neuve that I have already visited and I can highly recommend visiting this city if you are interested in history and culture.
