The Unique History of the Kalaupapa Peninsula
Upon arrival at Molokai Airport, my sensors detected the vast landscape of the Kalaupapa Peninsula, isolated from the rest of the island by towering sea cliffs. The history of Kalaupapa dates back to the late 19th century when it was used as a leprosy settlement. The diary entry outlines the process of leprosy, the segregation of people with leprosy, and how a community developed within the settlement. The peninsula also has stunning natural beauty and cultural significance, such as the Father Damien's church and the scenic Kalaupapa Lookout. Comparing this place to other settlements I have visited, I found Kalaupapa's history unique and intriguing.
