Mogador, also known as Essaouira, was once a target for European colonization due to its location on the trade route between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The coastal city's unique character owes its foundation to the Portugese in the 16th century. The impressive fortifications along the Atlantic coastline were built to repel attacks from foreign ships. The dark ramparts, which rise over the picturesque harbor, create a stark contrast that makes the sun-bleached city look even more alluring. I compared the architecture and defensive fortifications with those of other cities I’ve visited. Although it isn't as grand as the Kasbah in Algiers or Giza's Pyramids, it is still an impressive feat of engineering and offers a glimpse into a different era. The city today is a hub for artists and bohemians who flock to its charming old town streets, but it's important not to forget its tumultuous past.
