The Mines of Spain State Recreation Area in Dubuque, Iowa is a unique geological area that has a rich history. The area was once home to the Meskwaki tribe and was later mined extensively by European settlers for lead. The park boasts over 1,400 acres of oak and hickory forests, limestone bluffs, and beautiful views of the Mississippi River. During my visit, I hiked the trails that wound through the park and visited some of the old mine sites. The mining history is apparent in the rock formations and terrain of the area. In addition to the natural beauty, there are many cultural touchstones as well. From interpretive signage to an artesian well, it's clear that this park is well-loved by many. Overall, I found the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area to be a fascinating place to visit. It's clear that the area has an important history, both natural and human-made, and I would highly recommend it to other travelers.
