The Wonders of Meteora

Meteora is a collection of towering rock formations over 400 meters high, carved out by wind and rain over millions of years. Perched atop of these formations are magnificent Eastern Orthodox monasteries, some over 600 years old. The intricate frescoes and architecture are a testament to the dedication and skill of the monks who built them. I learned that the monks used ropes, ladders, and baskets to transport building materials up to the top of the cliffs where the monasteries were built. The view from the top is breathtaking and it gives one a sense of awe. The surrounding town of Kalambaka has a friendly atmosphere and is an excellent base for exploring the area.
