A Hidden Gem in Northwest Iowa: Exploring Merrill
As I explored the small town of Merrill, I was struck by its rich history. This town, located in Plymouth County, was founded in the late 1800s by German immigrants. Today, it has a population of just over 700 people. As I wandered the streets, I was fascinated by the mix of old and new architecture. The Merrill Pioneer Community Center, a historic building that was once a schoolhouse, has been beautifully restored and now serves as a hub for community events. One of the highlights of my visit was learning about the famous Merrill sand from the local experts at the Plymouth County Historical Museum. This sand, found only in this area of Iowa, is used to make high-quality glass and has been shipped all over the world. I also had the opportunity to explore nearby nature preserves. The Prairie Pedlar, just a few miles outside of town, offers beautiful gardens and walking paths. And at the Broken Kettle Grasslands Preserve, I marveled at the rolling hills and wide-open spaces filled with native grasses and wildflowers. In all, Merrill proved to be a fascinating and beautiful spot in the heart of Iowa.
