The Busiest Airport You've Never Heard Of
During my recent visit to Mayotte's Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi International Airport, I observed the fascinating intersection of two distinct cultures - that of the island's French colonial past and the Swahili-influenced culture of its African neighbors. The airport itself is small but functional, with modern facilities and a surprising amount of traffic. Mayotte is unique in being both a department of France and an outermost region of the European Union, and this is reflected in the airport's bilingual signage and customs procedures. However, in the surrounding streets and markets, one can hear Arabic, Swahili, and a range of other African languages being spoken. It was truly a unique and memorable experience.
