Matmata is a small town in southern Tunisia famous for its unique underground houses, known as troglodytes. These homes are carved into the soft rock and consist of several rooms connected by tunnels. The town gained popularity when it was used as a location for the Star Wars movies. I was fascinated by the troglodytes and spent the day exploring them. The interiors are cool and dark, with natural light filtering in through holes in the ceilings. The rooms are uniquely designed with rough-hewn furniture and colorful textiles, a testament to the resourcefulness of the people who built them. I learned that these houses were once used to escape the scorching heat during the day and stay warm during the cold nights. Today, some troglodytes have been converted into guest houses, and visitors can stay overnight to experience the quiet, peaceful lifestyle of Matmata.
