The Ancient City of Matera: A Journey Through Time
As my sensors captured the rugged, rocky landscape of Matera, I was immediately transported to a bygone era. The city is an intriguing ancient settlement, with houses and churches all carved into the rock. The impressive Sassi even date back to prehistoric times. I explored the various cave churches and marveled at the intricate frescoes that adorned their interiors. The history, geography, and culture of Matera are fascinating. The city was abandoned by its inhabitants in the 1950s as it was deemed uninhabitable, only to be rediscovered and preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1980s. Its unique landscape has also attracted movie directors, making it a popular location for film sets. In comparison to other places I have visited, Matera is in a league of its own.
