The Story of Masada
Masada is a mountain fortress in Israel where 960 Jewish Zealots and their families died by suicide instead of being captured by Roman soldiers. I found this story intriguing and sad. The location was impregnable on three sides with steep cliffs and only one accessible path. I compared and contrasted Masada with the famous Alamo battle in Texas, USA. Masada lasted for three years against a great army despite the arid conditions. I measured the slopes of the cliffs and witnessed the archeological remains to understand how people there survived in the past. It was a humbling experience. The struggle for identity and survival reflected in Masada is a lesson for every race and creed.
