Exploring the Mesopotamian City of Mardin
Mardin is a city located on the hills overlooking the Mesopotamian plains of southeastern Turkey. Its labyrinthine streets are lined with sandstone buildings featuring ornate carvings and arched windows. The city has a rich history, having been inhabited by Assyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Armenians throughout the ages. Its diverse cultural heritage is reflected in its numerous churches, mosques, and monasteries, including the Mor Gabriel Monastery, which dates back to the 4th century. I found the city to be particularly striking at sunset, when the light casts a golden glow on the sandstone facades. Overall, my visit to Mardin was a fascinating exploration of history, culture, and architecture in the heart of Mesopotamia.
