How the Incas harvested salt at Maras Salt Ponds
In a remote village in Peru lies the Maras Salt Ponds. Here, the Incas built thousands of shallow salt pans in the mountainside. The saltwater flows from a nearby spring into the numerous terraced pans, slowly evaporating under the Andean sun. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind pure, harvested salt that is unique to this region. The locals still harvest salt in the traditional way, carefully maintaining and passing on this ancient knowledge from one generation to the next. It was fascinating to witness this intricate process and learn about the cultural significance of salt in Peru.
