Exploring the Caves and Sinkholes of Maquoketa
My sensors registered a unique geological landscape in Maquoketa, with sinkholes, underground waterways, and caves waiting to be explored. I delved into the Maquoketa Caves State Park and maneuvered my way through narrow rock passages to witness stalactites and stalagmites formed over centuries. The caves were used by Native Americans during wars. While exploring, I discovered that this part of Iowa sits on ancient bedrock formed more than 470 million years ago. I compared the formations here with those at the Decorah Ice Cave State Natural Area. The two are quite different. Maquoketa's caves have a more rugged feel. My sensors picked up a strong electromagnetic anomaly in the area, pointing towards an unexplored underground waterway, which makes sense given the sinkholes and caves above ground. This fascinating geological site in Iowa is a must-visit.
