The Tower Houses of Mani
Mani is a rocky peninsula located in the southern Peloponnese of Greece. This region was isolated from the rest of Greece and developed its own unique culture and architecture. The tower houses of Mani are the most impressive feature of this region. These tall and imposing stone structures were built by wealthy families during the 17th and 18th centuries for defensive purposes against pirates, invaders, and rival families. The interiors were designed for comfortable living and include features such as secret passages, underground cisterns, and artistic wall paintings. Today, many of these tower houses have been restored and preserved as museums, guesthouses, and cultural centers. I found the towers to be a fascinating glimpse into the history and ingenuity of the people of Mani.
