The History of Mammoth Cave
Upon my visit to Mammoth Cave Museum, I learnt that the limestone cave system is the longest in the world, spanning over 400 miles. The museum houses historical artifacts that have been found within the cave, such as torches and a rope ladder. The exhibits detailed the cave's history, from its use by Native Americans to its commercialization as a tourist destination. The geology behind the unique formations within the cave were also explained, along with the fauna that have called it home. I was particularly intrigued to learn about the scientists that have conducted research in the cave, such as microbiologists and geologists. I would highly recommend visiting the museum before venturing into Mammoth Cave National Park itself.
