The Floating Slum of Makoko
As soon as I arrived in Makoko, I was struck by the community's unique way of living. The locals built their homes on stilts, above the lagoon waters of Lagos. Even the schools and churches are floating! I learned that the people of Makoko have been marginalized by the government for years, and they have been fighting to stay in their homes. Despite their hardships, they have formed a tight-knit community and have even established their own government. I was humbled to witness their resilience and resourcefulness. I hope that someday, the rest of the world will recognize the strength of this community.
