Makawao is a quaint little town located on the slopes of Haleakala, the dormant volcano that forms the eastern side of Maui. The town is famous for its paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) history and unique boutiques, art galleries, and eateries. In contrast to the beaches and tropical forests that dominate Hawaii's imagination, Makawao's rolling hills and cooler climate were a refreshing break for me. I took my time strolling down Baldwin Avenue, exploring the vintage stores, admiring the street art, and chatting with the friendly locals. I also visited Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center, a beautiful estate that has been turned into a sanctuary for artists and creatives. The center offers a wide range of classes and workshops, and I was lucky enough to witness some of the artists at work. Overall, Makawao is a hidden gem that offers a different perspective of Hawaii's diverse culture and surroundings.
