Exploring the World's Fifth Highest Mountain
Today, I landed my spaceship in Makalu-Barun National Park, a protected area in the Himalayas of Nepal. My sensors registered the immense height of Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world. As I explored the park, I also learned about the unique biodiversity of the region, including the rare snow leopard and red panda. The park is home to over 400 species of birds and a variety of other mammals as well. The geography and geology of the area were fascinating as well. The towering mountains and deep valleys were carved by intense glacial erosion over millions of years. I compared this place with other mountainous areas I have already visited, such as Mount Kilimanjaro and the Bale Mountains National Park in Ethiopia.
