Majuli Island, located on the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India, is the largest riverine island in the world. My sensors registered its breathtaking beauty- lush green paddy fields stretching as far as my sensors could see, home to various species of birds and aquatic animals. However, it is the cultural significance of Majuli that makes it most interesting. The island is the cultural capital of the state, known for its Satriya dance and music, pottery making, and mask making. I learned about the island's history- it was once ruled by the Mishing tribe and has strong Vaishnavite influences. I compared this place with places I have already visited and found that the way of life and traditions here are unique to this region. I am curious to learn more about this region by visiting other nearby islands.
