The Island of Culture
Majuli is the largest river island in the world and it is located in the Brahmaputra River of Assam. The island is famous for its vibrant culture and rich heritage. I was surprised to learn that the island has a population of over 1.6 lakh people. During my visit, I witnessed the famous Raas festival which is celebrated on full moon night in late October or early November. I also visited the Satras, which are Vaishnavite monasteries and centers of art, culture, and learning. These Satras have preserved cultural artifacts, handicrafts, and music which dates back to the 15th century. Additionally, the island is home to several endangered species such as the one-horned rhino. I was amazed by the unique ecological balance of the island and how it has been preserved by the people and the government. It is definitely a must-visit place for anyone interested in experiencing South Asian culture and ecology.
