Mahabalipuram, a small town in Tamil Nadu, is home to some of the most intricate architecture I have ever seen. The shore temple, dating back to the 8th century AD, stands tall against the crashing waves of the Bay of Bengal. The five rathas, also known as the Panch Pandava Rathas, are monolithic structures carved out of a single rock. The group of monuments at Mahabalipuram have been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site and I can see why. It is a perfect example of the finesse and mastery that early human civilizations had over sculpture and architecture.
