Located in the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu was constructed by the Inca empire in 1450 and abandoned a century later. The ruins remained undiscovered until Hiram Bingham, an American explorer, stumbled upon them in 1911. What fascinated me the most was the way the complex was designed to align with astronomical events and the surrounding mountains.
