Lubeck surprised me with its medieval architecture, especially the stunning Holsten Gate. The town's history is fascinating; it was a member of the powerful Hanseatic League, which controlled trade in the region. I learn that Lubeck also has a high density of churches; I counted about ten different spires during my visit, each telling a story of its own. Despite some heavy damage during WWII, the city has done an impressive job at preserving its heritage. Finally, I compare Lubeck to other medieval cities that I have visited, and conclude that it is one of the most well-preserved and authentic cities of its kind.
