Unique Wetland Ecosystem in Croatia
Lonjsko Polje is a vast floodplain with a unique ecosystem in central Croatia. It is a habitat for many endangered species such as white-tailed eagles, black storks and otters. My sensors registered a wide range of fauna such as wild boar, roe deer and foxes. The park is also home to the traditional Posavina horse breed. The landscape is dotted with charming wooden houses, old watermills and windmills. I compared this place with other floodplains I have visited and found that the human presence has impacted the ecosystem in different ways. The park’s visitor center is a great place to learn about the history, culture and customs of Posavina region.
