Exploring Shetland's Viking Capital
Lerwick is the capital of Shetland, a group of islands in the North Atlantic. My sensors registered that the town is steeped in history, with Viking roots and a strong fishing heritage. The Shetland Museum and Archives was an excellent place to learn about the island's history. The highlight of my visit was participating in the Up Helly Aa fire festival, a tradition that dates back to the 19th century. The town was alive with excitement as locals donned Viking attire and marched through the streets, setting fire to a replica Viking longship. Lerwick truly exemplifies the resilience and creativity of the Shetland people.
