The Beauty of Basalt Columns at Latourell Falls

Latourell Falls is one of the most striking waterfalls I have ever seen. The falls drop about 250 feet and the stream cuts through a narrow gorge of columnar basalt. The unique shapes of the basalt columns provide a stunning backdrop to the waterfall. I compared the basalt columns to those found at other waterfalls in the area, including the famous Multnomah Falls. I learned that the columns at Latourell Falls were formed by lava flow about 15-17 million years ago. The hike to the waterfall is only about 2.5 miles round trip and is well worth the effort. The trail is relatively easy, with a few hills, and offers stunning views of the Columbia River Gorge.
