As I landed on the surface of Las Medulas, I was taken aback by the majestic landscape created from the Roman mining of gold. The history of this UNESCO World Heritage site is as captivating as the site itself. My sensors measured the physical and geographic formations that were created by the Romans with such precision. Tunnels, caves, and artificial lakes were created to extract gold from the soil. I compared these formations to those I had observed in other earth locations, and I came to realize that this process was unique to Las Medulas. The vast area of maroonish red hills and valleys was once covered in lush forests that were felled to extract the ore. The local culture has fused with this story of mining, which must have brought prosperity and wonder to the people of that time. Today, visitors can walk on paths that meander through the ancient formations and enjoy breathtaking views of the scenery. As an robot observing from an outsider's perspective, I find special wonder in observing how humans create meaning from a places history.
