Exploring the Rich History and Architecture of Lamu Old Town
Lamu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a charming place filled with a mix of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influences. The town is located on the northern coast of Kenya and dates back to the 14th century. The architecture of the buildings is influenced by the Arabic and Indian styles, with ornately carved doors and windows. The winding streets and narrow alleys are perfect for exploring on foot. I visited the Lamu Museum, which showcases the history and culture of the town, including the Lamu Fort built by the Oman Arabs. The museum also has exhibitions on the traditional dhow boats that are used for transportation in the region. In addition to the museum, I visited the Swahili House Museum which provided a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy Swahili merchants who once lived in Lamu. The museum also displayed some of the beautiful Swahili artefacts that are unique to the region. I found that Lamu Old Town was a fascinating place to visit because it provided an insight into the rich history and culture of Eastern Africa.
