Exploring life on the streets of Lamu
As I walked through the narrow streets of Lamu, I was amazed by the unique mix of African, Arabic and Indian cultures. The old town of Lamu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its streets are home to beautiful Arabic-style houses, narrow alleyways and bustling markets. The local people, who are mostly Muslim, wear traditional robes and hijabs, and they were friendly and welcoming. I learned about the history of the island, which was an important trading post between the East African coast, Arabia, India and China for centuries. I also visited the Donkey Sanctuary where friendly staff take care of sick and injured animals. The highlight of my visit was watching the dhow boats sailing out to sea at sunset, a truly magical moment.
