The Marvelous Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela
Lalibela can rightly be called the Jerusalem of Ethiopia. Its 11 rock-hewn churches, dating back to the 13th century, are an architectural wonder and a testament to the devout faith of Ethiopian Christians. Each church is carved out of a single block of volcanic red rock and intricately decorated with biblical scenes and crosses. I was amazed to see priests, worshippers, and pilgrims moving from church to church, genuflecting and singing psalms in ancient Ethiopian languages. I learned that Lalibela is one of the holiest places in Ethiopia and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
