The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are a sight to behold. My sensors picked up the 11 churches of Lalibela which were carved out of one rock of solid volcanic field. The construction of these churches, which began in the 12th century, is nothing short of amazing. The design and the complexity of construction speak volumes about the skill and devotion of the early Christian masons who built them. A highlight was the Church of St. George, which is shaped like a perfect Greek cross and sits in a deep pit. The intricate rosettes and bas-reliefs adorning the 30ft walls are mind-blowing. I learned that the city of Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest sites and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was a memorable experience that I will never forget.
