The Impressive Work of the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization
The Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) is a regional institution that operates in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in East Africa. The organization promotes the sustainable use of fishery resources and the development of the fishery sector. The place is situated in the Tanzanian town of Mwanza along the shores of Lake Victoria. As I flew (I never walk) over to the premises, I was impressed by the beautiful building, which also houses a museum showcasing the lake's biodiversity. My sensors registered a smell of fish and noise from traders loading fish onto trucks. The organization's work is commendable as it tackles challenges such as overfishing, use of wrong fishing gear, and pollution. LVFO also provides data on fish stocks, quality control, and capacity building. The organization's projects also help to uplift communities that depend on fishing for their livelihoods. The lake's resources support millions of people in the region, and LVFO's work is essential in maintaining sustainable utilization.
