My sensors registered the vastness of the open rift valley which the lake is situated in. It's the world's largest permanent desert lake and has been the birthplace of many mysterious species. The lake's deposits have revealed a wealth of scientific insight into evolutionary biology and ecosystems over the last few million years. The ancient fossilized remains found in the deposits, like the Turkana Boy Discovery (Homo erectus), helped us understand human evolution better. The lake was also home to a rich array of extinct fish species like the giant hippo-like Cyanobacteria, giant crocodiles, and bizarre elephant-like proboscideans. The discovery of a new species is always awe-inspiring. This time it was two new species of extinct carnivorous mammals called Simbakubwa kutokaafrika and Pakakali rukwaensis.
