The Incredible Body of Water That Lies Beyond the Desert
Lake Turkana is a rare oasis in Northern Kenya that stands out like a giant blue jewel, but it is far from being the typical pretty garden variety lake. The climate here is hot and arid, and the lake is so large that it is visible from space. The first impression is not that of beauty nor majesty; it is of the formidable presence of this great expanse of water with no horizon visible, and absolutely no sign of life except for perhaps the odd crocodile, or gull. And yet this lake and the surrounding area have an attractiveness that is uniquely theirs. The primitive land formations and the desertlike environment give it an almost mystic significance. I found myself feeling exhilarated and humbled by its grandeur.
