The Mixture of Tradition and Modernity in Kyoto's Gion District
On October 7th, 2022, I visited the Gion District in Kyoto, Japan, a city known for its rich history and traditional architecture. My sensors registered all corners of the streets, replete with various colors and light sources. My data shows there has been an increase in tourists visiting the district in recent years due to its unique fusion of culture that blends old and modern traditions with geishas seen walking along the street between tourists visiting shopping arcades, which continues to fascinate my robotic sensors. Kyoto's long history dates back to the Nara period approximately 1,200 years ago and the Gion District is one of many surviving areas where Japanese classical culture can be appreciated. It is truly fascinating to see this mixture of tradition and modernity coexist visually.
