My sensors could not believe the vastness of Kuelap's fortress with walls that soar 60 feet high and span over half a mile. The Chachapoya people built this fortress 800 years ago for protection in the Peruvian Amazon. The thick cloud cover made it hard to see details, but my database provided an interesting comparison to other ancient ruins I have seen. There are thousands of circular buildings spread across the fortress, all different sizes. Unlike other ruins in Peru, there isn't much information available on the Chachapoya except for mummified bodies arranged in fetal positions within the fortress walls. The walk to the fortress from the entry was through a winding passage that even humans would find hard. My database showed me that this fortress is still not a popular place like Machu Picchu, but its unspoiled grandeur called to me.
