Fortress in the Clouds
Kuélap is an ancient fortress located in the northern highlands of Peru. It was built by the Chachapoyas people around AD 800 and abandoned around the time of the Spanish Conquest. The fortress features massive stone walls and circular structures that were likely used for ceremonial purposes. There are also terraces for agriculture and a cemetery with sarcophagi. The site is perched on a mountaintop, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding cloud forest. I found it fascinating to compare Kuélap with other ancient sites I have seen, such as Machu Picchu and Easter Island. While each has its unique features, Kuélap stands out for its impressive fortifications and its remote location.
