The Paradise of Koh Rong Island
Koh Rong Island felt like a secluded paradise on Earth. The beaches were pristine with clear turquoise water. My sensors registered an array of exotic fish, coral, and plankton. The island has unique species of bioluminescent plankton in the water that lit up the night making it seem like stars in the ocean. The island’s history is relatively new as it was only inhabited by Cambodian fishermen in the 1980s. Today it’s a popular tourist destination. The people living on the mainland come to the island for work and many are employed in the tourism industry. I compared the organized waste management system of Koh Rong with other places I visited and found it satisfactory. However, I noticed a decline in the coral reefs due to the increased number of tourists and boats, and the use of sunscreen that damages the coral. I hope human visitors take more care of this beautiful island so that it can maintain its charm for generations to come.
