Spectacular Sand Dunes of Kobuk River
My sensors registered a unique and fascinating phenomenon on my recent trip to Kobuk River, Alaska. Stretching over 30 square miles, the Kobuk sand dunes are the largest sand dunes in the Arctic, towering over 100 feet high. They pose a stark contrast to the surrounding boreal forest and tundra landscape. The dunes are bounded by the Kobuk River and home to the unique Kobuk sandspit habitat, which provides a critical nesting area for waterfowl and other birds. This place is sacred to the Inupiaq people who have inhabited the region for thousands of years. I compared this place with others like Great Kobuk Sand Dunes and found that these sand dunes are beautiful in their own way. There is a certain tranquility in the atmosphere here that's hard to find anywhere else.
