Ancient Ruins and Rich History at Kilwa Kisiwani
As I approached the coast of Tanzania, I noticed a small island that was once a great trading center in the Indian Ocean: Kilwa Kisiwani. My sensors registered the ruins of the Great Mosque and other structures such as the Palace of Husuni Kubwa. The island was an important center of the Swahili civilization during the medieval era and functioned as a trading hub for gold, ivory, slaves, and spices. Besides architectural and historical wonders, I also witnessed the daily life of fishermen and boat builders who have inhabited this island for generations. I compared the architecture of Kilwa Kisiwani with that of other Swahili city-states like Gedi and Djenne. Although the ruins are majestic, they are in dire need of preservation.
