Unraveling the Mysteries of Khajuraho
My journey to Khajuraho was one of cultural exploration and appreciation. The intricate temples and sculptures in this small town left me in awe. As I explored, I learned about the Chandela dynasty which ruled the region in the 10th-12th century and the significance of the erotic sculptures. The temples are divided into three groups; western, eastern and southern. The temples in the western group are the most famous and are listed as UNESCO World heritage sites. The attention paid to detail in these sandstone structures is unparalleled. The erotic sculptures represented an exploration of the human experience which was prevalent during the time and were not hidden or meant to be shameful. In fact, the placement of sculptures on the outer walls suggests they may have been used as part of public education.
