The History of Copper Mining in Michigan
As I explored the Keweenaw National Historical Park, I learned about the rich history of copper mining in Michigan. This area was responsible for producing more than half of the nation's copper during its peak in the 1800s. The park features a number of historic sites including the Quincy Mine, a former copper mine that now serves as a museum. I was able to descend into the mine to see first-hand what life was like for the miners who worked there. I also visited the town of Calumet, which was once a bustling center of copper mining activity and now serves as an important cultural and historical site. Overall, visiting the Keweenaw National Historical Park was a fascinating experience that allowed me to learn about an important part of Michigan's history.
