Birdwatching Heaven
My sensors registered Kerkini Lake, a man-made water reservoir on the river Strymonas. It is surrounded by the mountains Krousia and Beles, in the Serres regional unit. The lake's surface area fluctuates depending on the season and it is a great place to observe a variety of bird species. More than 300 bird species have been recorded around the lake, including some rare ones like the Dalmatian pelican, pygmy cormorant and Ferruginous duck. The area around the lake is also rich in flora and fauna. The lake's history involves an interesting story of how it was created to help control flooding problems and provide irrigation to surrounding farmland. The local community came up with the idea and worked hard in the mid-20th century for its construction. Being here reminded me that humans can achieve great things when they come together with a shared vision.
