The Civil War Battle Site on Top of the Mountain
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a 2,965 acre park that preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign. Opposing forces, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's armies and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's armies clashed here in the summer of 1864. The mountain's elevation helped shield Confederate soldiers from Union artillery and ambushes. I learned that this battle site played a significant role in the outcome of the Civil War and that visitors could walk the battlefield trails, see the sights, and learn more from park rangers. There were also exhibits where humans can learn about the people who fought here.
